Birstall Footbridge lifted into place

Danaher & Walsh’s contract to construct a footbridge over the A6 at Birstall, Leicester, has reached a major milestone following the installation of the bridge’s superstructure.

The 77 tonne, 50 metre steel truss structure was lifted into place in a major operation, which took place under a full road closure over the August bank holiday weekend.

The superstructure arrived in four sections by road, before being assembled in the carriageway over the Friday night.

A huge, 500T crane was used to gently guide the structure into position on Saturday afternoon, watched by crowds of local residents.

Finishing works took place over Saturday night, enabling the road to be fully reopened on Sunday morning – two days earlier than planned.

The finished product will provide a safe, convenient link across the busy A6 dual carriageway from the Hallam Fields residential development to Birstall Park & Ride and The Cedars Academy.

The scheme is being funded by Leicestershire housebuilder Jelson Homes as part of the Section 106 conditions relating to their flagship Hallam Fields development.
