Birstall Footbridge gets ICE award
Danaher & Walsh's Birstall Footbridge, constructed on behalf of Jelson Homes, was named Medium Project of the Year at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards 2019.
The landmark 50m footbridge over the A6 dual carriageway in Birstall, Leicester, saw off stiff competition to be named winner in the category, which recognises projects up to £10m in contract value.
The bridge crosses the A6 dual carriageway from the major Hallam Fields housing development to the Birstall Park & Ride site. The single-span 50m x 3.5m footbridge crosses five lanes of traffic using a hybrid steel bowstring arch Vierendeel truss design.
The project also included associated landscaping, plus new footways / cycleways providing access between Hallam Fields, The Cedars Academy, Birstall Park & Ride and nearby Wanlip village.
Judges commended the project team for active community engagement, use of innovative construction techniques and minimising local disruption by reducing the necessary road closure by several days.
Speaking about the award, Danaher & Walsh's Managing Director Dan Danaher said: "Well done to everybody involved on this project, and thank you to the ICE panel for selecting it for this award.
"We're always very grateful to be recognised for our efforts in delivering projects successfully. This project was very local to us, so we're all the more aware of the positive impact the bridge and footways will have on the local environment."
