Key aims and challenges

The embankment to the south-west perimeter of the site was settling, with the risk of slipping into the adjacent Hinksey Stream and undermining the stability of an area of the site.

The existing gabion wall system was providing very little restraint, and it was determined that sheet piles should be installed.

In addition, Rip Rap armour stone was installed in front of the sheet piles to provide further stability to the bank. Surfacing, blockwork and a palisade fence was subsequently reinstated.

The piling works presented a challenge because of the topography of the site, so careful pre-planning was required to ensure constructability. A temporary piling platform was constructed to enable their installation.

All works took place while the facility remained opened to the public; edge protection and clear signage allowed this to happen in a safe manner with disruption to the public kept to a minimum.
