Key aims and challenges

A retaining wall of 60m in length in three sections was required to support the earth bank beside Cockett Lane.

Each of the three sections of wall was constructed slightly differently and further divided into tiers to follow the gradient of the road.

After initial excavation, sheet piling was used to support the earth. Reinforced concrete bases and toes were constructed.

The walls were built up using a combination of engineering bricks and facing bricks.

The majority of the works were carried out under a full road closure.
