Key aims and challenges
The new store was constructed on a large vacant plot in a prominent location on the corner of Gatehouse Road and Bicester Road. As part of the development, extensive highway improvements were required. The A41 Gatehouse Road was widened and a left-hand turn lane constructed. A traffic signalised junction was installed to create a main entrance into the new store. Street lighting was upgraded and new traffic signs installed.
Extensive utility diversions were undertaken on Gatehouse Road, including a substantial Thames Water sewer diversion.
On Bicester Road, extensive footway improvement works took place and a pedestrian crossing was installed. This section comprised further utility diversion works, as well as provision for incoming services and construction of the main store foul drainage connection.
Works also comprised alterations to the roundabout connecting the two roads.
How did we do?
The scheme required close liaison with numerous stakeholders including RG Group, Sainsbury's, numerous statutory undertakers and Buckinghamshire Council, whose head office is coincidentally immediately adjacent to the works location.
Carefully planned phasing and traffic management works allowed construction to take place safely while minimising disruption to traffic flows on this busy arterial route.
