Key aims and challenges

This involved construction of a new adoptable access road, forming a junction of the new road and Rykneld Road, and safety improvements to Rykneld Road.

The new access road, constructed to the required standards for highway authority adoption, is around 50m in length and features a turning head and bellmouth accesses to both the new Aldi store and a new care home development.

The safety improvements to Rykneld Road comprised the widening of footways and installation of a puffin crossing. The works also included installation of new street lighting, resurfacing and white lining.

As part of the same contract, Section 104 drainage works were carried out. A connection was made to the existing foul sewer on Rykneld Road.

A storm sewer for the site was constructed, as well as an attenuation basin, overflow system and outfall into the existing Holly Brook watercourse.

An area of the works adjacent to Rykneld Road was subject to a no-dig zone owing to the presence of existing mature trees. In order to mitigate this, a Cellweb cellular confinement system was installed to allow construction of the highway without requiring extensive excavation.
