Key aims and challenges

The academy is an inclusive, Sikh-ethos free secondary school, which acquired the site known as the former head office of building products giant Tarmac.

As part of the £20m project to convert the site into a modern education campus, Section 278 highway works were required to improve vehicle access and safety.

The entrance into the campus was widened. Millfields Road was widened and a right-hand turn lane installed. A pelican crossing with central refuge was constructed. Footways and the carriageway were asphalt surfaced and white lining was applied.

The presence of a multitude of underground services within the carriageway significantly added to the complexity of the scheme. Danaher & Walsh coordinated the works of the statutory undertakers to ensure timely delivery of the highway works.

Traffic management was installed to ensure the safe progression of the works whilst maintaining traffic flows.
