Key aims and challenges

Owned and operated by The Crown Estate, Fosse Park near Leicester is one of the largest and busiest destination retail parks in the UK.

The Fosse Park West development, on the site of the former Everards Brewery, involves the addition of 140,000 sq. ft of additional retail and restaurant space, increasing the size of Fosse Park by 40%.

The highway works involved the widening of Grove Way and the construction of a signalised junction into the new area of the retail park, as well as a pelican crossing for pedestrians.

Additionally, improvements were undertaken to the junction of Grove Way and Soar Valley Way, with sections of the latter also resurfaced as part of the scheme.

The highway works took place simultaneous to the main construction works, meaning the interface had to be carefully managed and access to the main works site maintained.

Soar Valley Way is one of the busiest roads in Leicestershire’s highway network, so carefully planned traffic management was key to the project’s success. Some elements of the works were undertaken at night to minimise disruption to the highway.
