Key aims and challenges
Optimus Point is a commercial location near Glenfield, Leicester, that is being developed by Wilson Bowden Developments. Situated next to Junction 21a of the M1 and the A46 Leicester Western Bypass, its location lends itself very well to logistics and distribution operations.
DPD selected Optimus Point as the location for a new distribution centre. The 60,000 sq ft unit was constructed by Winvic, who appointed Danaher & Walsh to carry out the Section 278 works.
This follows on from previous works to the adjacent plot for premium clothing retailer Boden, for which Winvic also constructed a distribution facility with D&W carrying out the highway works.
The works for DPD comprised forming a new entrance to the site, including a splitter island, which was tied-in to the existing highway. The carriageway was widened to accommodated a new right-turn lane and pedestrian refuge island.
A new bus stop area was constructed, as well as 100m of new footway to provide safe pedestrian access to the site. Street lighting and highway drainage was installed. Danaher & Walsh also worked with statutory undertakers to coordinate their works.
To minmise disruption to business traffic, final surfacing and lining works were carried out under a full road closure over a weekend.
