Key aims and challenges

The highway improvements, relating to the construction of Costco's new Leicester warehouse, comprised reconfiguration of the roundabout, replacement and upgrading of the traffic signals, replacement of signage, widening of the carriageway on the roundabout and approach roads, resurfacing and re-lining.

How did we do?

Works on this busy traffic junction, on one of Leicester's main arterial roads, were completed with minimum disruption to road users and pedestrians.

Careful planning was critical to this project’s success, partly due to the involvement of statutory undertakers. Extensive traffic management was necessary on this busy roundabout, which is on one of the main arterial roads into the city of Leicester, serving traffic approaching from the North via the A46.

The roundabout also carries a large amount of traffic throughput relating to an adjacent retail park and Asda superstore. These retail outlets also generate a large amount of pedestrian footfall, so specific pedestrian management was also put in place.

The scheme was completed within the allocated 15 week period. The programme was initially delayed due to additional items and additional traffic management restrictions.  The programme was subsequently revised to ensure timely completion.
