Key aims and challenges
The aim of this scheme was to deliver safety improvements to a section of the eastbound A1307 near Linton, which had been identified as an accident cluster site.
This 1km section of dual carriageway was demonstrated to encourage vehicle speeds in excess of the speed limit during off peak times. In peak times, queueing traffic in lane one created a hazard for vehicles exiting the Dalehead Foods site by obscuring faster moving traffic in lane two.
The improvement works comprised the reduction of carriageway width to one running lane on approach to existing junction with Dalehead Foods, using hatch marking.
A bus lane was constructed along the section, and the shared use footway / cycleway was widened. New road markings and signage were also installed.
Using traffic management, the works were completed whilst keeping the highway fully open.
