Key aims and challenges
Unity Square is a brand new UK Government hub located in central Nottingham, adjacent to the city's mainline railway station. The 10-storey complex will be occupied by HMRC and other governmental agencies.
Set to be home to up to 4,000 staff, the development is part of the Nottingham's Southern Gateway regeneration project. The scheme has been jointly developed by Peveril Securities and Sladen Estates.
D&W's scope of works included S278 highway improvement works as well as public realm works to the exterior of the building complex.
The highway works comprised the widening of the very busy Sheriff's Way, the construction of a splitter island, resurfacing and lining.
The public realm works comprised the construction of a stunning landscaped area to the colonnade, main entrance area and steps of the new building. The new look of the area is influenced by the stunning Yorkstone flag paving, combined with high quality street furnishings and tasteful soft landscaping.
Meticulous phasing of the works was critical owing to the requirement to maintain traffic flow on Sheriff's Way and the need to interface with other contractors working on the scheme.
An existing medium-pressure gas main was present in the vicinity of the works. Liaison was required with Cadent to ensure suitable protection for the gas main during the works.
