Key aims and challenges
Coldham's Common is a large area of common land not far from Cambridge city centre, split in two by the Cambridge-Ipswich railway line. The common has a diverse range of habitats and serves as a recreation space for the people of Cambridge.
Meanwhile, the Chisholm Trail is a brand new walking and cycling route designed to create a mostly off-road and traffic-free route between Cambridge Station and the new Cambridge North Station. It will link to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Biomedical Campus in the south of the city and to the business and science parks in the north.
This contract involved the construction of a major phase of the Chisholm Trail, through Coldham's Common.
Works comprised realignment and widening of around 860m of footway, the construction of a wooden footbridge, the replacement of gates and cattle grids and the installation of signage, lighting, fencing and street furniture.
Works were carried in accordance with a strict timeframe, and with minimal impact on the surrounding ecologically-sensitive environment.
