King's William Bridge, Leicester

The project was started in February this year and was successfully completed in June. The job was to strengthen and repoint this 17th Century Bridge which is a Grade II listed building. The bridge was given its name from its use in 1696 when it was widened in order to carry the coach and horses of King William III over Rothley Brook on their way to Bradgate House to visit the Grey Family.

In order to complete this job, the work involved repointing in traditional soft lime mortar the parpets, arches and cutwaters following restrengthening remedial works as well as the replacement of cobble stone paving on a lime mortar bed.

Ecological and Environmental Awareness

Whilst conducting a pre-construction survey on a site for an Anglian Water Services scheme near to Broughton, Kettering our General Foreman, Dave Burkill, noticed the presence of active holes and burrows which he considered to be those of badgers.

We immediately conducted a comprehensive site survey with an Ecologist who confirmed Dave's opinion.

To allow our works to take place and cause as little disruption as possible to the roaming lifestyle of the badger family, mutually restrictive containment zone fencing will be erected between our works and the active setts allowing co-existence.
